Hotline: Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert (Internet Only).
Date: Thursday, November 6, 2006 (Special Edition) compiled at: 3:30pm.
    To report: (207) 846-8002, or birds@yarmouthbirds.com.
Coverage: York, Cumberland, and Sagadahoc Counties.

This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to a Special Edition of the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, summarizing the highlights of the 3rd Annual Southcoastal Maine Rarity Roundup conducted on Sunday, 11/5, as well as other reports received between Friday, 11/3 and Monday, 11/6. The next update of the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert will be on Friday, November 10th.

This alert is sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com.

Weather Summary: High pressure dominated Fri. through Sun, with a cold NW flow. High and low temps were 5-10 degrees below normal (normal in Portland= 51/33F) for the period. A shortwave Mon. morning produced some sprinkles, but temperature moderated on westerly winds.

A *WESTERN KINGBIRD* was discovered at Laudholm Farms in Wells on 11/3. It was found just before noon as it flew “across the field to the house just north of the Visitor Center.” A short while later, it was refound in the yard of a light gray house at the corner of Laudholm and Skinner Mills Rd. No reports, positive or negative, were received for 11/4, but it was not found on the 5th.

The family of three MUTE SWANS continue in Legion’s Pond at the intersection of Paul St and Rte 103 in Kittery (Delorme Map 1: B-3), and a lone BRANT was on the Golf Course at East Point in Biddeford Pool on the SCMRR.

A drake AMERICAN WIGEON has returned to Evergreen Cemetery, while HARLEQUIN DUCKS are on the increase, with a total of 21 on the SCMRR. Six RUDDY DUCKS continue in Prout’s Pond (off of Pleasant Hill Rd, behind “The Food Guy,” Delorme Map 3: A-4).

A MERLIN is back at South Portland’s Forest City Cemetery (off of Lincoln Street; Delorme Map 73: G-3) as of the SCMRR on the 5th.

AMERICAN COOTS are making a strong showing this fall. 5 continue at the Sanford Sewerage facility (off of Rte 4, Delorme Map 2: C-4) and 10 were found at scattered locals in Scarborough during the SCMRR. This pales in comparison, however, to a tally of 200+ at the mouth of the Abagadassett River in Bowdoinham on the 4th.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was off of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on the SCMRR.

A late SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was discovered at Drake’s Island in Wells (Delorme Map 3: E-1) on the SCMRR. Single tardy WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were found on the SCMRR at Drake’s Island, Spurwink Marsh in Cape Elizabeth, and off of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh. One LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was spotted at Brave Boat Harbor in York (Delorme Map 1: B-5), while two AMERICAN WOODCOCKS seemed a bit out of place along Portland’s Eastern Promenade on the SCMRR

An adult ICELAND GULL was at Dyer Pt in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on the SCMRR.

An immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER visited a Phippsburg feeder on 11/5.

A belated report was received of a NORTHERN SHRIKE at the Saco Heath on the 1st.

Single RED-EYED VIREOS were at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland and at Biddeford Pool during the SCMRR.

Have CAROLINA WRENS staged another minor uncursion into the area, or were they just reported and/or detected more often this week? Singles continue at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 73: G-6), Capisic Pond Park in Portland, and Seapoint Beach in Kittery. Another dropped by a Scarborough yard on the 4th. Meanwhile, a total of 8 were tallied on the SCMRR, including 5 in Portland (with a pair each along the Eastern Promenade and along the Commercial Street Extension (Delorme Map 73: F-3).

HERMIT THRUSHES made a good showing on the SCMRR, with a total of 21 recorded. Most impressive, however, were 13 individuals around downtown Portland, with 7 alone in the garden of the First Parish Church on Congress Street.

The only GRAY CATBIRD noted was a single individual continuing at Portland’s Dragon Field (behind the Quarry Run Dogpark, near the intersection of Ocean and Presumpscot; Delorme Map 72: C-3), through at least the SCMRR on 11/5.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found at Hinckley Park in South Portland (off of Highland Rd; Delorme Map 73: G-4) on 11/3. A NASHVILLE WARBLER near the Portland Fish Exchange (Delorme Map 73: F-4) was one of 7 species of warblers tallied on the SCMRR [along with one NORTHERN PARULA at Prout’s Neck in Scarborough, many YELLOW-RUMPED, 1 PINE (Fort Foster, Kittery), 1 “WESTERN” PALM WARBLER (Bug Light Park, South Portland; Delorme Map 73: E-4), two COMMON YELLOWTHROATS (Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth and at the South Portland Transfer Station, off of Highland Rd, Delorme Map 3: A-4), and THREE YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS. One was at Portland’s Eastern Promenade, one was along Sheridan Street in Portland’s East End (Delorme Map 73: E-3), and another at Trundy’s Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: A-5).

Meanwhile, a PINE WARBLER and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER were together at South Portland’s Bug Light Park on the same day. Another lingering (or reverse migrant?) Pine Warbler was at Winslow Park in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on 11/4. A COMMON YELLOWTHROAT was also detected at Evergreen Cemetery on 11/3.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was reported from Portland’s Eastern Promenade on the 4th. 8 “IPSWICH” SAVANNAH SPARROWS were tallied on the SCMRR. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was discovered at Kettle Cove on the 5th, and continued through the late afternoon to be tallied on the SCMRR. 127 SNOW BUNTINGS were recorded on the SCMRR, while the only two LAPLAND LONGSPURS were found at Jordan’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth (at the intersection of Wells Rd and Spurwink Ave; Delorme Map 3: A-4).

The third DICKCISSEL of the fall dropped by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth on 11/4.

A single RUSTY BLACKBIRD was recorded at the pond next to the parking lot for Biddeford Pool Beach on the SCMRR.
