This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. Weather Summary: A large, strong coastal low on Sat. produced heavy rain (2+ inches), very strong SE winds, including gusts up to 50mph. Strong westerly winds then developed for Sun and Mon, despite a weak cold front early Wed am that produced light showers, above normal temps (into the low 60’s in the southern areas) Mon. and Tues was a nice break. A low developed and produced rain through mid-day on Thurs, before clearing out in the afternoon. Some high counts of waterfowl from the Sanford Sewerage facility this week (off of Rte 4 in Sanford; Delorme Map 2: C-4) included 190 RING-NECKED DUCKS on 10/28, 98 RUDDY DUCKS on 10/29, and an uncommon-inland LONG-TAILED DUCK all week. Up to 4 AMERICAN COOTS and up to 20 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were also noted. Also reported from the ponds there this week was a NORTHERN GOSHAWK on 10/27 and a rare-inland BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE during strong onshore winds on 10/29. An early eclipse male KING EIDER was discovered off of Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg on 10/27, while a drake HARLEQUIN DUCK continues along the shoreline of the Biddeford Pool neighborhood. COMMON GOLDENEYES began arriving as well this week. 6 RUDDY DUCKS were in Prout’s Pond in Scarborough (off of Pleasant Hill Rd, behind “The Food Guy,” Delorme Map 3: A-4) on 11/1 while 4 were still in Grondin Pond in Scarborough (off of Clearwater Rd; Delorme Map 3: B-4) as of 11/2. A PEREGRINE FALCON passed through Freeport’s Hedgehog Mountain Park (off of Pownal Rd, Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 29th. Seven AMERICAN COOTS were in Grondin Pond in Scarborough on 11/2. One AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was still at Biddeford Pool on 10/27 and a tardy SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was at Reid State Park in Georgetown on 11/1. One subadult POMARINE JAEGER and 5 adult BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were off of Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on the 2nd. The first ICELAND GULL, an adult, was spotted at Pine Point in Scarborough on the 1st. A SHORT-EARED OWL was flushed from Biddeford Pool’s East Point Sanctuary on 10/31, and was observed flying over to, and landing on, nearby Wood Island. RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS continue in a Windham yard and on Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth this week. Single EASTERN PHOEBES were noted at a handful of locations this week. Is this winter fixing to be a good one for NORTHERN SHRIKES? Four were found already this week: an immature at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on the 27th; one along Rte 114 in Gorham (between Gorham center and Rte 22; Delorme Map 5: E-2); an immature along the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh on the 31st, and an adult at Hedgehog Mountain Park in Freeport on the 1st. Tardy migrants discovered this week included: a BROWN THRASHER along the “Eagle Trail” behind the Topsham Library (off of Foreside Rd; Delorme Map 6: B-3) on 10/27; RED-EYED VIREOS in Evergreen Cemetery on 10/27 and 11/1 and in East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool on10/27 and in a York yard on 11/1; a BLUE-HEADED VIREO at Evergreen on 11/1; a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER in a Windham yard on 10/30; a NASHVILLE WARBLER at Evergreen on 11/1; and a BALTIMORE ORIOLE in a West Kennebunk Yard on 11/1. Meanwhile, the neighborhood of Biddeford Pool held a number of late migrants on 10/31: 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 2 FIELD SPARROWS, and one BALTIMORE ORIOLE. CAROLINA WRENS were noted at Capisic Pond Park on the 27th and at Hinckley Park in South Portland (off of Highland Ave; Delorme Map 73: G-4). Meanwhile, after a 1-2 month absence, “our” Carolina Wren returned to the feeders here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth on the 2nd. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was discovered along the seldomly-birded Stroudwater Trail in Portland (next to the UNUM complex off of Congress St; Delorme Map 73: F-2) on 10/31. Another “O.C.” was found at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland on 11/1. DARK-EYED JUNCOS were really arriving en masse this week. Small flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS were noted at many locales along the coast this week, but the only LAPLAND LONGSPUR reports were one at Drake’s Island Beach in Wells (Delorme Map 3: E-1) on the 27th and two on the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 11/1.
