This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. Weather Summary: It was a very active week of weather. A strong storm system produced rain on Fri, heavy rains and strong S winds Fri. night, and strong NW winds for Sat. Up to 2” of rain fell, and wind gusts of nearly 50mph were recorded. Then, another storm produced more rain – including some heavy thunderstorms – on Mon. A cold NW flow Mon night through Thurs. kept skies mostly cloudy and temps below normal, but produced good movements of migrants. A pond behind the Wal-Mart in Brunswick (off of Tibbet’s Rd, which is off of Bath Rd – Rte 24 – in the Cook’s Corner area; Delorme Map 78: C-4) hosted a SNOW GOOSE on 10/23, but it was not present on 10/25. The Sanford Sewerage facility (off of Rte 4; Delorme Map 2: C-4) is a great waterfowl hotspot. For example, on 10/22, 150 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 126 RUDDY DUCKS, and 221 RING-NECKED DUCKS were tallied. Meanwhile, the first HARLEQUIN DUCKS reported this season were two pairs at Perkin’s Cove in Ogunquit (Delorme Map 1: A-5) on 10/23. A number of other newly arriving waterfowl species were detected this week: COMMON MERGANSER (10/21); BUFFLEHEAD (10/21); and LONG-TAILED DUCK (10/23). 1508 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, along with 6 GREAT CORMORANTS, passed Cape Elizabeth’s Dyer Point (Delorme Map 3: B-5) in three hours on the 23rd. 2 GREAT and 3 SNOWY EGRETS off of the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 10/20 were getting late. Tardy OSPREYS were over Hermit Island in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-4) on the 22nd and over Exit 10 of I-295 in Falmouth the next day. Five AMERICAN COOT were at Sanford Sewerage on the 22nd. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was noted at Portland’s Back Cove on the 20th. Single WHIMBRELS were at Hermit Island 10/21-26 and Biddeford Pool on 10/24. Tardy peeps included a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER at Portland’s Back Cove on 10/20, and single LEAST SANDPIPERS at the Sanford Sewerage facility on 10/22 and along the Eastern Road Trail on 10/25. 25 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were at Sanford Sewerage on 10/22. The first PURPLE SANDPIPER of the season flew by Dyer Point on 10/23, with three off of Biddeford Pool on the next day. A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO dropped by a Georgetown yard on the 19th, while another was seen in a yard on Gerrish Island in Kittery on the 20th. 8 EASTERN PHOEBES on Hermit Island on 10/22 was a good late October number. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER stopped by a Portland yard on 10/21. A CAROLINA WREN was heard singing from Loop Rd in Georgetown (Delorme Map 7: D-1) on the 24th, while 1-2 were heard at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on the 26th. A great HERMIT THRUSH flight overnight produced 150+ at Hermit Island in Phippsburg on the morning of 10/26. Late Neotropical migrants included: A very late OVENBIRD in a York yard on 10/17-19; single BLUE-HEADED VIREOS in Yarmouth’s Bayview Preserve on 10/21 and at the Falmouth Town Landing on 10/24; a SWAINSON’S THRUSH on Hermit Island in Phippsburg on 10/25; a NASHVILLE WARBLER at Capisic Pond Park on 10/23 and 10/26; a very late AMERICAN REDSTART at Capisic on 10/24; and BALTIMORE ORIOLES at Hermit Island on 10/21 and 10/26, and Capisic on 10/24. 1-3 “IPSWICH” SAVANNAH SPARROWS were noted at a number of coastal locales, with a high count of 6 at Reid State Park in Georgetown on the 25th. An excellent sparrow flight on 10/24 at Portland’s Eastern Promenade included 115+ WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. FOX SPARROWS (10/24) and the first AMERCAN TREE SPARROWS (10/26) arrived this week. Single LAPLAND LONGSPURS were noted from Scarborough Marsh’s Eastern Rd Trail on 10/22, and over Portland’s Dragon Field on 10/26, while the first SNOW BUNTING of the season passed over Freeport’s Hedgehog Mountain Park (off of Pownal Rd, Delorme Map 6: C-1) on 10/26. The DICKCISSEL here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth continued through 10/20.
