Weather Summary: N/A. A female GREATER SCAUP arrived in Portland’s Back Cove on 10/4. A PACIFIC LOON was reported from the mouth of the Scarborough River on 10/8, visible from near the Yacht Club on Prout’s Neck (Delorme Map 3: B-4). The first HORNED GREBE report of the season came from the Cumberland Town Landing (Delorme Map 5: D-5) on the ninth. The PEREGRINE FALCON continues on the Andros Mill along the Androscoggin River on the Brunswick/Topsham border (Delorme Map 6: C-3) this week. A lingering LITTLE BLUE HERON was noted from Hermit Island in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-4) on 10/3. Was the RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD reported from Fortunes Rocks Beach in Biddeford on the 3rd our last for the year? A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was spotted in West Bath on 10/6, while others continue in a Windham yard and on Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth this week as well. A CAROLINA WREN was along Island Road on Hermit Island in Phippsburg on the 3rd. Nine species of warblers at Sandy Point Beach on Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth on 10/3 included a late YELLOW WARBLER. Good numbers of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were widespread this week. Single ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were discovered in Hill’s Beach (at the corner of Goldwaithe and Sky Harbor Rds, Delorme Map 3: C-3) on 10/4 and at Joe’s Pond in South Portland on 10/9. Joe’s Pond – a scrubby wetland next to some ballfields - which harbors a section of the South Portland multi-purpose trail lies between Pine and Roosevelt Streets, off of Broadway in South Portland (Delorme Map 73: F-4) also hosted a PRAIRIE WARBLER and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT that day as well. A good sparrow flight occurred overnight on the 2nd, producing widespread large flocks of mostly WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS for the morning of the 3rd. A smattering of WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and increasing numbers of White-throated Sparrows and DARK-EYED JUNCOS were reported throughout the week. A VESPER SPARROW was at Sandy Point Beach on 10/2. A DICKCISSEL passed over South Portland’s Bug Light Park (Delorme Map 73: E-4) on the ninth.
