This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: Heavy rain on Fri. preceded an evening cold front that cleared skies nicely for a good overnight passerine flight. A low pressure system then produced rain for Sun and Sun night, but provided a NW flow for Monday. A **VIRGINIA’S WARBLER** was discovered on Monhegan Island (Lincoln County) on 9/28, and was refound on 9/30, and was observed through at least 2:30pm that day. It was being seen in the vicinity of the laundry lines at the Trailing Yew. This constitutes a 2nd State, and 2nd Monhegan Island, record. Two adult and one juvenile MUTE SWAN continue in a pond at the corner of Rte 103 and Paul Rd in Kittery (Delorme Map 3: B-3) on the 29th, when they were joined by 1-2 AMERICAN COOT. A drake REDHEAD was at the Sanford Sewerage facility (off of Rte 4, Delorme Map 2: C-4) on the 29th and 30th and 14 RUDDY DUCKS arrived on the 30th. Single PEREGRINE FALCONS were spotted at Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 9/28 and Fort Foster in Kittery on 9/29. One AMERICAN COOT was at the Sanford Sewerage facility on 9/30. Extremely rare inland, and unseasonable late, 6 PIPING PLOVERS were reported from the Sanford Sewerage facility on the 30th. 30 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and a single STILT SANDPIPER were at the Sanford Sewerage facility on the 29th. A tardy RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD visited a Windham yard on 10/2. A CAROLINA WREN was singing near Seapoint Beach in Kittery on the 29th. Warbler diversity is decreasing as quickly as leaf color is increasing, but 10 species of warblers were tallied at Freeport’s Hedgehog Mountain Park (off of Pownal Rd, Delorme Map 6: C-1) on 10/2, while a TENNESSEE WARBLER visited a Falmouth yard on 10/1. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was noted at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on 9/29. Two LARK SPARROWS were discovered at the edge of Bug Light Park in South Portland (Delorme Map 73: E-4) on 10/1. At 10:00am, one was near the Rugosa Rose hedges along the multipurpose path, just after it turns away from the road. Migrant SAVANNAH, SONG, SWAMP, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were widely reported this week. A DICKCISSEL has been frequenting the feeders here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth since the evening of the 29th, continuing through today.
