Weather Summary: Another good passerine flight occurred Thurs. night on clear skies and light NW winds. Rain on Sat. and thunderstorms on Sun, along with southerly winds, were thanks to a pair of low pressure systems. Clearing skies and light winds Sun. night through Wed. allowed passerine migration to proceed. A southerly flow returned for Wed. and Thurs. The ***WESTERN REEF-HERON*** was last observed at 6:00pm on Thursday the 21st from the Goat Island Saltwater Fishing Access pull-off along Rte 1B in New Castle, NH. A number of birders searched the area this weekend, to no avail. If any further reports are received, they will be posted immediately at www.yarmouthbirds.com/bird_news.asp. A *GOLDEN EAGLE* was reported, without details, from Mount Agamenticus in York on 9/25. Raptors migration was well-observed this week. 826 raptors, including 702 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK, and 3 PEREGRINE FALCONS over York’s Mount Agamenticus on the 21st. 167 raptors over the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth in two hours on the 22nd included 148 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and one PEREGRINE FALCON. Meanwhile, a Peregrine has once again returned to the Andros Mill on the Androscoggin River between Brunswick and Topsham (Delorme Map 6: B-3) this week, and one was spotted at the Kennebunk Plains on the 26th. 125 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were reported from Hill’s Beach in Biddeford on the 26th. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was at Seawall Beach in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-5) on the 21st, a juvenile was on Ferry/Western Beach in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the 24th, and a juvenile in the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on the 25th. Two adult AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were spotted on Ferry/Western Beaches on 9/24. Two STILT SANDPIPERS were still at the Sanford Sewerage facility (Delorme Map 2: C-4) on 9/21, and 5 were in the Eastern Rd salt pannes on 9/25. A single juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was noted at Phippsburg’s Seawall Beach on 9/21. A smattering of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD reports were still being received this week. 60-70 NORTHERN FLICKERS were observed at South Portland’s Wainright Farm Recreation Area (off of Highland Rd, Delorme Map 3: A-4) in only 15 minutes on the morning of the 21st. A CAROLINA WREN was singing at Fort William’s Park in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 9/22, one was singing in Portland’s Western Cemetery on 9/28, and one was singing from what is left of the vegetation on the site of the new Mercy Hospital along the Commercial Street Extension in Portland (Delorme Map 73: F-3) on 9/28. Warbler diversity and volume was down this week, but increasing numbers of YELLOW-RUMPED and PALM WARBLERS (of both subspecies) were reported. 28 VESPER SPARROWS were tallied at Kennebunk Plains on the 26th.
