This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: High pressure and above-normal temps dominated Fri. through Tues. Clear and calm nights allowed for good passerine flights nightly through Mon. A stronger southerly flow increased on Mon, with temps in the low 80’s inland (10+ degrees above normal). Rain fell Tues. night ahead of cold front that ushered in cooler air on NW winds. Clearing skies and light NW winds produced a significant passerine flight for Thurs. am. The ***WESTERN REEF-HERON*** continues in New Hampshire through at least 6:00pm on Wednesday the 20th. A juvenile *YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON* was noted on Stratton Island on 9/16. Volunteers and a biologist there that day, clearing Oriental Bittersweet, also noted a juvenile COMMON MOORHEN, two AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, one AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, and a MOURNING WARBLER. Two TRICOLORED HERONS continue in the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh through the 20th. A good hawk flight on 9/21 included over 400 birds, mostly BROAD-WINGED HAWKS over Mt. Agamenticus in York by 11:00am, and 107 birds – including 96 Broad-wings and one PEREGRINE FALCON over the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth between 10:00am and 11:30am. A VIRGINIA RAIL was heard at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on 9/15. Biddeford Pool Beach again hosted a significant concentration of shorebirds, with 1-2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 40 DUNLIN, and a very impressive 75 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS (5 juvenile) joining 900+ SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and SANDERLING all on 9/16, while two WESTERN SANDPIPERS were noted there the next day. Three WILLET, at least one of which was a “WESTERN,” were in Jones Creek in Scarborough Marsh on the 18th. Two BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were at Biddeford Pool on 9/17. 11 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS on 9/18 increased to 14 on 9/20 in the in the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh. STILT SANDPIPERS continue their impressive showing this fall, with one at Sanford Sewerage (Delorme Map 2: C-4) on 9/18 and 2 there the next day; 7 in the Eastern Rd pannes on the 18th, with 8 there the next day. Meanwhile, one 1st winter WILSON’S PHALAROPE was in the pannes on the 9/18 and 9/20 as well. A basic-plumaged adult LITTLE GULL was spotted in Pepperrell Cove in Kittery Point on the 15th, along with a 1st cycle FORSTER’S TERN. Single RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS continue in yards in Windham, and on Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth this week. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was in Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery on the 15th. Another PHILLY V and 16 species of warblers led by BLACK-THROATED GREENS, NORTHERN PARULA, and BLACKPOLL WARBLERS passed over and through Yarmouth’s Sandy Point Beach on Cousin’s Island in the morning of the 21st. A late-ish RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD and an early-ish DARK-EYED JUNCO were also spotted there that day as well the a 600+ bird flight. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was found in Capisic Pond Park in Portland on 9/15. A LARK SPARROW was reported from Hill’s Beach, near Goldwaith Road, in Biddeford (Delorme Map 3: C-3) on 9/16 and 18. Single DICKCISSELS were at Portland’s Dragon Field (behind the Quarry Run Dogpark at the intersection on Ocean and Presumpscot; Delorme Map 72: C-3) on 9/15, and at the Sanford Sewerage facility on 9/19.
