This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: SW winds Fri. and Sat. provided above normal temps (low 80’s on Sat) for a change, before a cold front – which produced strong thunderstorms – passed Sat. night. NW winds behind the front produced a very good passerine flight. High pressure, and below normal cool, fall-like air (low temps in the upper 30’s in western sections of our reporting area Tues. morning) – along with good migrant movements – continued on northerly winds through Wed. An approaching low resulted in occasional drizzle and clouds on southerly winds Wed. evening through Thurs. The ***WESTERN REEF-HERON*** continues in New Hampshire through at least 2:30pm on Wednesday the 13th. The **EARED GREBE** at the Sanford Sewerage facility was last seen on 9/6. The Sanford Sewerage facility is open to birders, as reported last week. To reach the Sewage Ponds from the intersection on Rtes 4A/109 and Rte 4 in South Sanford, follow Rte 4 North to a right onto Gavel Road (at a usually-blinking stoplight). Follow to the end (Delorme Map 2: C/D-4). However, please note that the Friday hours are limited to 7-10am ONLY, along with weekends and holidays. Hours on Monday through Thursday are 7am-3pm. A **BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER** was observed on Appledore Island (Delorme Map 1: D-1) on 9/8. It was a one-day wonder. A *CONNECTICUT WARBLER* was banded on Appledore Island on 9/7, while one was found on the mainland at the East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool on 9/8. An immature male HARLEQUIN DUCK continued on Appledore, at least through 9/8. An immature GREAT CORMORANT was at Reid State Park in Georgetown on 9/12. An AMERICAN BITTERN visited Freeport’s Florida Lake Park (off of Rte 136, Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 9th. One LITTLE BLUE HERON continued this week at the Sanford Sewerage facility, joined by a second on the 8th. Meanwhile, two TRICOLORED HERONS are now hanging around the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh. An AMERICAN COOT stopped by the Sanford Sewerage on 9/8. Two AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were at the Winding Brook Turf sod farm in Lyman. Winding Brook turf is welcoming birders to bird their property, but you must call in advance: phone 207-499-0162 for permission. The farm is along Rte 111, 1/8 mile west of its junction with Rte 35. Single American Golden-Plovers were on Hill’s Beach in Biddeford on 9/9, and over the Eastern Rd. Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 9/10. Two juvenile WESTERN SANDPIPERS were observed among 400+ SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and 500+ SANDERLING on Biddeford Pool Beach on the 11th. One DUNLIN was on Biddeford’s Hill’s Beach on the 9th. One STILT SANDPIPER was spotted along the Eastern Rd. Trail on the 10th, with 4 found there the next day. 6 Stilt Sands were at the Sanford Sewerage facility on the 11th. It was a tremendous week for BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS (all juveniles, as expected). One was at the Sanford Sewerage on 9/8; four were at the Winding Brook Turf sod farm on 9/8; one frequented Biddeford Pool Beach from 9/9-11; 2 were at South Portland’s Wainright Farm Recreation Area on 9/8 – with 3-4 there on 9/11; two were at Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg on 9/10; and two were at Sebago Lake State Park (Delorme Map 5: C-1) on 9/12. A “molted” RUFF was reported from Goosefare Brook along Rte 9 in Saco (Delorme Map 5: C-3) on 9/9. Two juvenile LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were discovered in the salt pannes along the east side of the north end of the Eastern Rd. Trail on 9/10, while the 1st basic WILSON’S PHALAROPE continued at the Sanford Sewerage through 9/8. Some other shorebird high counts of note included: 85 KILLDEER and Winding Brook Turf on 9/8, 14 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS at Sanford on 9/8, and a very impressive 31 WHIMBREL along the Eastern Rd Trail on 9/10 (with 13 still there the next day). Appledore hosted an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the 9th. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER continues on Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth. A CAROLINA WREN oversummered in a South Freeport yard this year. About 700 passerines passed over and through Sandy Point Beach on Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth on the 10th. 14 species of warblers were led by an abundance of AMERICAN REDSTARTS and NORTHERN PARULAS. 13 species of warblers were part of a 200-bird flight there on the 13th that also included 2 late-ish EASTERN KINGBIRDS. Meanwhile, BLACKPOLL WARBLERS are becoming increasingly common with each successive flight. One BLUE-WINGED WARBLER and a single CAPE MAY WARBLER were banded on Appledore on 9/11. Meanwhile, an early “YELLOW” PALM WARBLER was at the Center Pond Preserve in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: D-5) on 9/10. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was found at Biddeford Pool’s East Point Sanctuary on 9/10, with two on Appledore Island that same day. A juvenile CLAY-COLORED SPARROW graced a Falmouth yard on the 10th A LARK SPARROW was present on Appledore on the 8th, while another was discovered at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth on the 11th. Meanwhile, a LINCOLN’S SPARROW arrived at Sandy Point on 9/10, with an early WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW arriving at East Point Sanctuary on the same day.
