This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: Impulses along a stalled frontal boundary produced scattered showers on Fri. Rain then began again Sun. afternoon, and drizzle and showers continued intermittently through Tues. am, as a pair of low pressure systems passed to our south and east. Skies then slowly cleared – with a few more widely scattered showers on Wed - and northerly winds returned, as high pressure built in. Temps remained below normal all week, as the late fall-like weather pattern continues. Good passerine flights occurred on Tues and Wed night. The ***WESTERN REEF-HERON*** continues in the Piscataqua River Area on the Maine/New Hampshire border. The last positive report from the Maine side was observations between 11:15am and 1:15pm from the Kittery Point Town Landing on Sunday, the 27th. However, daily observations are being made in and around New Castle, NH through today, the 31st at 4:10pm. A *GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER* was banded on Appledore Island (Delorme Map 1: D-5) on the 28th. Other banding highlights mentioned this week included 2 MOURNING WARBLERS on 8/26, and numbers of YELLOW-BELLIED, “TRAILL’S,” and LEAST FLYCATCHERS. A single MANX SHEARWATER was observed from Cape Elizabeth’s Dyer Point (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 8/28, while a lone GREATER SHEARWATER passed there on the 19th. One adult GREAT CORMORANT passed Dyer Point as well, on the 28th. Single juvenile BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were observed at Scarborough Beach State Park (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 8/26 and at Reid State Park in Georgetown on 8/27. A juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was discovered on the Mayall Rd. sod fields in Gray (Delorme Map 5: B-4) on 8/26. Other shorebirds high counts this week included: 10 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS in Biddeford Pool on 8/24; 100 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and 1 PIPING PLOVER at Scarborough Beach State Park on 8/26; 10 KILLDEER on the Mayall Rd sod fields on 8/26; 16 GREATER YELLOWLEGS in Biddeford Pool on 8/24; 3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS in the west end of Scarborough Marsh on 8/27; 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER at Evergreen Cemetery on 8/31; 5 WILLETS along Jones Creek in Scarborough Marsh on 8/25; 2 WHIMBREL at Reid State Park on 8/27; 6 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS at East Point in Biddeford Pool on 8/24; 27 RUDDY TURNSTONES at Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth on 8/28; 132 SANDERLING at Reid State Park on 8/27; 225 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and 40 LEAST SANDPIPERS in Jones Creek on 8/25; 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS at East Point in Biddeford Pool on 8/24; and 3 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS along Jones Creek on 8/25. Two adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were found on Parson’s Beach in Kennebunk (Delorme Map 3: D-1) on the 27th. A small number of ROSEATE TERNS continue in the Pepperrell Cove area of Kittery Point (Delorme Map 1: C-4) this week, while an immature FORSTER’S TERN was observed at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth on the 8/29. One adult Forster’s was noted in Pepperrell Cove on 8/31. A female RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER returned to a Windham yard on the 28th, and another continues on Yarmouth’s Cousin’s Island. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen at Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery on 8/31. The CAROLINA WREN continues here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth this week. A great flight of passerines was recorded at Sandy Point Beach in Yarmouth on the 31st. 17 species of WARBLERS included single PRAIRIE and MOURNING, and led in volume by 80++ AMERICAN REDSTARTS (unidentified warblers = 211). Two PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, two YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, and single DICKCISSEL and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were also tallied. The banding station on Appledore Island also experienced a very busy morning. Meanwhile, one migrant PRAIRIE WARBLER was in Yarmouth’s Pratt’s Brook Park (off of North Rd, Delorme Map 5: D-5) on the 26th, and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was found in the trails east of the parking area at Kettle Cove on the 29th.
