Weather Summary: Southerly winds on the backside of high pressure and ahead of an approaching low continues Fri. through Sun. A surface wave, two low pressure systems, and a cold front then combined to produce some significant rain on Sun., with a few showers remaining on Mon. A weak cold front Tues night reinforced the cool air and NW winds, with instability producing showers on Wed. as did a shortwave on Thurs. The ***WESTERN REEF-HERON*** continues in the Piscataqua River Area. In the past few days, it has been observed more frequently in New Castle, New Hampshire than in Kittery, Maine in the past few days. However, it was on “our side” as recently as 6:35am on Wednesday the 23rd. Up-to-the minute updates, directions, photos, and other information can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com/bird_news.asp. Meanwhile, the Kittery area (Delorme Map 1: B-4) has received significant coverage – the coverage that it likely deserves – with numerous reports of other “good birds” throughout the town (see reports below). A MUTE SWAN pair with a juvenile was observed in a pond at the corner of Rte 103 and Paul Rd. in Kittery on 8/20, over 100 GREEN-WINGED TEAL were in the salt pannes along the east side of the north end of the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 8/24, while three BLACK SCOTERS were off of Kittery’s Fort Foster on the 22nd. A half-day pelagic out of Portland on the 19th traveled 15-20 miles offshore to the southeast, and produced 10 GREATER SHEARWATER, 1 MANX SHEARWATER, about 50 WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS, and about ~20 (mostly, if not all) RED-NECKED PHALAROPES. Meanwhile, seawatching from The Nubble in Cape Neddick on strong Easterly winds on the 20th produced at least 40 Greater and 2 Manx Shearwaters, and at least 15 NORTHERN GANNETS in less than an hour. A single adult GREAT CORMORANT was observed at Fishing Island in Pepperell Cove, Kittery Point on the 18th. While one TRICOLORED HERON continues in the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh this week, a second was observed on 8/18. A MERLIN has been frequenting the islets and shore of Fort Foster this week, while another Merlin and up to two PEREGRINE FALCONS continue in Scarborough Marsh. Two adult and one juvenile AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were off of Pine Point in Scarborough on the 24th, while a juvenile BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was discovered at Fort Foster on the 23rd, and two STILT SANDPIPERS were in the Eastern Road Trail salt pannes in Scarborough Marsh on the 24th, along with the continuing WILSON’S PHALAROPE. Shorebird volume was down this week, but other shorebirds high counts this week included: 81 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 104 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS off of Pine Point on 8/24; 21 KILLDEER at the Wainright Farm Recreation Area off of Highland Rd in South Portland (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 8/21; 13 GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Fort Foster in Kittery on 8/23; 15 LESSER YELLOWLEGS on 8/22 in York Harbor (Delorme Map 1: B-5); single SOLITARY SANDPIPERS at multiple locations; 20 WILLETS along Jones Creek on 8/18; 3 WHIMBREL on 8/18 at Pine Point; 5 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS at Fort Foster on 8/22; 5 RUDDY TURNSTONES at Fort Foster on 8/22; 22 SANDERLING at Ferry Beach in Scarborough on 8/24; 300 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS in Jones Creek on 8/18; 100+ LEAST SANDPIPERS along the Eastern Rd Trail on 8/24; 15 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS in the salt pannes along the Eastern Road Trail on 8/24; 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS at York Harbor on 8/20; and 6 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS in the salt pannes along the Eastern Road Trail on 8/24. A basic adult BLACK-HEADED GULL was spotted at Fort Foster on the 22nd, as it foraged and roosted between the park and Pepperell Cove (and the Kittery Point Town Landing). Up to 4 FORSTER’S TERNS (2 on 8/18, 1 on 8/19, and 4 on 8/23) have been frequenting the Pepperell Cove area of Kittery this week. On the 23rd, the 4 Forster’s were observed from Fort Foster among 2,000+ COMMON TERNS that also included at least 12 ROSEATE TERNS and 200+ BONAPARTE’S GULLS. A juvenile ATLANTIC PUFFIN was spotted about 1 mile east of Stratton Island on 8/21. Small flocks of migrant COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were reported from a number of locations this week. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was noted at Sandy Point Beach in Yarmouth on 8/23. Two OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were seen at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland on the 23rd. After a summer-long absence, the CAROLINA WREN has returned to the feeders here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth as of the 19th, and another put in an appearance in a Portland yard this week.
