This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to a SPECIAL EDITION of the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past messages can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. At 6:30 this morning, an adult dark-morph ***WESTERN REEF-HERON*** was discovered in Kittery. (Possibly THE bird from Nova Scotia???) . It was observed first on Gooseberry Island, east-southeast of the Kittery Point Town Landing. It then flew to nearby Fishing (also known as Fisherman’s) Island, about 1/3 mile south of the pier at the Town Landing. The bird was viewed from the piers, as well as a local charter boat, through about 9:30am. It then disappeared into taller grass on the island. As of 10:45, the bird had not been relocated, despite closer approach by a kayaking birder, and a non-birder who was walking around on the small island. Since the SNOWY and GREAT EGRETS that were also there similarly had vacated the island, it is likely that the Reef-Heron also left to feed as the tide receded. The next high tide is today (Friday) at 7:50pm. Directions: From the traffic circle in Kittery, follow 103 towards Fort Foster (see Birder's Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al). Pass Fort McClarey, then see commercial buildings on right and post office on left. Captain Simeon's Galley and Frisbee's Market are on the right. Town landing is behind those buildings (limited free one hour parking). Also parking across street next to post office for a small fee to be paid at Frisbee's Market. Additional parking is 1/4 mile further on 103 by making a left onto School Street and parking in school lot at end of road (Delorme Map 1:C-4, where it is labeled as Pepperell Cove). A boat, Captain & Patty’s Piscataqua River Tours (207-451-8156) would be available to take birders closer to the island if necessary.
