This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: The outer fringes of Tropical Storm Beryl brushed us, producing showers Fri. am., followed by more showers and thunderstorms from Fri. night’s cold front, which then stalled offshore. On Sat., a low moved up along the front, producing heavy rain (up to 3”) through Sun. am, with showers continuing through the pm. A shortwave touched off a few isolated thunderstorms on Thurs. pm. Temps were mostly in the low to mid 80’s, slightly above normal, with heat and humidity again increasing by week’s end. An *AMERICAN AVOCET* was discovered in the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Road Trail in Scarborough Marsh on 7/26. A *YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON* continues on Stratton Island, at least through 7/20. A NORTHERN SHOVELER was again noted in the salt panned along the Eastern Road Trail in Scarborough Marsh on 7/27, while three drake SURF SCOTERS were off of Outer Green Island on 7/20. The continuing drake HARLEQUIN DUCK and 5 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were off of Ocean Drive in Biddeford Pool on 7/27. An adult GREAT CORMORANT was spotted on Outer Green Island on the 20th, with an immature bird spotted off of East Point in Biddeford Pool on the 27th. A single TRICOLORED HERON joined 10 LITTLE BLUE HERONS in the Eastern Road Trail salt pannes on 7/26. Shorebirds, all adults so far – except for the local breeders – are now arriving in full force. Two “WESTERN” WILLETS and 12 WHIMBREL were noted at Stratton Island on 7/20, with one “Western” Willet and 4 Whimbrel in Biddeford Pool on the 27th. 2-3 WESTERN SANDPIPERS were noted among a roosting flock of 600+ SEMIPALMATED SANPIPERS along Ocean Ave in Biddeford Pool on 7/27. 15 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS at Popham Beach State Park on the 22nd was a good July total. Meanwhile, the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh hosted 2 STILT SANPIPERS and 1-2 WILSON’S PHALAROPES on 7/26. Other shorebirds high counts this week included: 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 101 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS at Hill’s Beach in Biddeford on 7/27; 12 PIPING PLOVER at Reid State Park in Georgetown on 7/26; 25 GREATER YELLOWLEGS along the Eastern Road Trail in Scarborough Marsh on 7/23; 85 LESSER YELLOWLEGS from the Eastern Road Trail salt pannes on 7/26; 35+ “EASTERN” WILLETS in Biddeford Pool on 7/27; 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS from a number of locations; 30 RUDDY TURNSTONE at Outer Green Island on 7/20; 42 SANDERLINGS at Reid on 7/26; 35 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER in the Eastern Road salt pannes on 7/26; and 300 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS on Stratton Island on 7/20. A 1st Cycle LITTLE GULL put in another appearance at Stratton Island on the 20th, and a 2nd-cycle bird was reported from East Point at Biddeford Pool on 7/27. A single YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO also continues on Stratton Island, at least through 7/21. A male ORCHARD ORIOLE observed carrying food at Portland’s Dragon Field (behind the Quarry Run Dogpark, at the intersection of Ocean and Presumpscot in Portland; Delorme Map 72: C-3) on 7/22, confirming breeding at this location for the first time.
