This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: A strong Bermuda High and a deep low to our NW continue to pump in southerly winds and tropical moisture. A frontal system undulated back and forth across the area, producing more significant rains, but we saw at least scattered showers every day except Tues. this week. Onshore winds and cloud cover did keep temps below normal on most days this week as well, but with very high humidity continuing. One *ROYAL TERN* was relocated this week at Popham Beach State Park on 6/24, while the two RED KNOTS continue there as well. A *BLACK VULTURE* was seen in flight over the Kennebunk Plains on 6/27, with two TURKEY VULTURES. A tally of the breeding specialties in the area that day included good totals of 6-8 UPLAND SANDPIPERS, 34 PRAIRIE WARBLERS, 6 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, and 31 VESPER SPARROWS. None of the three CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were seen or heard from that day. One RED-THROATED LOON was off of Higgin’s Beach in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the 26th. Locally rare in summer, a PEREGRINE FALCON was reported from Rte 77 in Cape Elizabeth, just over the Scarborough Town Line (Delorme Map 3: B-4), on 6/25. Quite possibly the first migrants of “Fall,” four GREATER YELLOWLEGS were spotted over Eastern Rd in Scarborough Marsh on the 28th, while a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER at Wells Harbor on the 29th could have, in theory, been lingering, northbound, or southbound! An adult CASPIAN TERN was found at Laudholm Beach in Wells on 6/29, landing on the beach to roost with gulls. Good news for nesting terns has been in short supply again this year, so it was nice to hear that there are a record 57 LEAST TERNS on Stratton Island this year (they nested there for the first time last year I believe) as of last week. Unfortunately, the state’s largest mainland colony, on private property in Goose Rocks Beach, which had about 30 pairs this year was wiped out by a predator. A few days later, however, the colony on Stratton jumped to 98 nests (!!!) likely in large part due to the relocation of Least Terns from the Goose Rocks Beach colony. Success at this location would be a boon to Maine’s population of this threatened species. A juvenile RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and two adults visited a feeder off of Mitchell Road in Cape Elizabeth this week. Single CAROLINA WRENS were heard singing at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth on 6/26 and in the neighborhood near Nubble Light in Cape Neddick the next day. A female BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was observed carrying food in the powerline cut just east of the Kennebunk Plains, on the north side of Rte 99 in Kennebunk on the 27th. A female ORCHARD ORIOLE was at Portland’s Dragon Field ((behind the Quarry Run Dogpark near the intersection of Ocean and Presumpscot in Portland; Delorme Map 72: C-3) on the 24th. CORRECTIONS: Last week’s **BRIDLED TERN** report was actually from Outer Green Island – not Stratton – as erroneously reported. First seen on 6/19, it continued through at least the 23rd. If accepted, this would constitute Maine’s 2nd Record of this tropical species. Meanwhile, the rumor of the *GULL-BILLED TERN* constituting a potential 3rd state record was untrue – there are in fact 9 previous records of this species.
