This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: It sure felt like summer this week! A broad W, becoming SW flow under high pressure increased temps (and humidity) into the 80’s, with temps hitting 90 inland on Sun (cooler along the coast each day as seabreezes developed). Scattered pm thunderstorms developed on Fri, and again on Mon. with the passage of a weak shortwave. A cold front, and associated thunderstorms, on Tues. reduced temps. and humidity, but it still remained in the 80’s through Thurs. when showers and thunderstorms developing again with an approaching cold front and increasing humidity on Thurs that continued into Fri as our “tropical connection” continued, in terms of both weather and birds! It was a tern festival at Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg this week. Multiple trips there from the ABA Convention in Bangor produced a “Cape May Effect.” The headliner was a **GULL-BILLED TERN** on 6/22, photographed alongside one of the two *ROYAL TERNS* present there that day. The Gull-billed is rumored to be a 3rd state record. A CASPIAN TERN was a flyby on the 20th and a single AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER that flew towards Seawall Beach on the 17th.Lingering shorebirds there included 4 RED KNOTS n 6/20, with two on the 22nd, along with up to 6 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 10 SANDERLING on the 20th. An immature GREAT CORMORANT was also noted on 6/20 and a RED-BECKED GREBE was present on the 17th. None of the above were present on the morning of the 23rd. The hotspot of the park is the expected sandbar at the mouth of the Morse River. Furthermore, a belated report was received of two *BLACK SKIMMERS* (one photographed) from nearby Fort Popham last Tuesday (6/13) Not to be outdone, biologists on Stratton Island this week observed a **BRIDLED TERN** on 6/20, and a *SANDWICH TERN* on 6/21! As far as I know, those birds have not been seen again. One female GADWALL was observed in the salt pannes along Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh on 6/16, while a very late drake HARLEQUIN DUCK continues off of East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool, at least through 6/16. A lingering RED-THROATED LOON was off of Pine Point in Scarborough on the 17th. One immature GREAT CORMORANT is still lingering off of East Point in Biddeford Pool, through at least the 16th. Two AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were noted at Biddeford Pool on 6/21. UPLAND SANDPIPER chicks were observed at Kennebunk Plains this week, while lingering non-breeding shorebird numbers were way down. Non-Popham high counts included: 11 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS on Hill’s Beach in Biddeford on 6/16, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS along Jones Creek in Scarborough Marsh on 6/18, 1 RUDDY TURNSTONE off of East Point in Biddeford Pool on 6/16, one RED KNOT that was spotted from the Pine Point Lobster Co-op in Scarborough on the 16th, and 8 LEAST SANDPIPERS at Reid State Park in Georgetown on 6/22. 75-100 BONAPARTE’S GULLS were on Scarborough’s Western Beach (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the 16th. As of 6/18, at least one RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER chick looked close to fledging as it peered out of its nest hole in South Portland’s Hinckley Park (off of Highland Rd; Delorme Map 73: G-4). A single male continues in a Hollis yard as well, and a female returned to a Windham yard on 6/21. Wandering male WARBLERS included a PRAIRIE at Freeport’s Hedgehog Mountain Park (off of Pownal Rd; Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 17th, and a MAGNOLIA in a Freeport yard on the 17th and 18th. Not haven been present at those sites this year before, these birds could be failed breeders, or possibly very tardy migrants. One of the two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS was heard at the substation along Maguire Rd. in the Kennebunk Plains on the 21st, but both were missed by multiple parties on the 17th.
