Weather Summary: Yet another coastal storm produced yet more rain Fri. afternoon through Sun. However, as the week progressed, the trough in the jet stream (that has resulted in our crummy weather) finally began to show signs of flattening out or ridging, and that resulted in a more zonal flow that is more typical of early summer. Instability and a series of disturbances produced scattered showers and thunderstorms Mon through . Thurs. with some locally heavy downpours – especially on Wednesday afternoon. Showers Thurs. morning and gusty N winds were thanks to the strengthening remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto just offshore. A third-hand report of a possible **ALBATROSS** was received on 6/11. At 11:11 am, the bird was reported from over the Royal River in Yarmouth from I-295. Unfortunately, word wasn’t received until 2 hours later. A handful of birders checked various nearby locales, but to no avail. Following recent sightings of a Yellow-nosed Albatross in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, the only thing surprising would be this up-river (and interior-bay) location. A very late HARLEQUIN DUCK was found off of East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool on 6/11. An immature RED-THROATED LOON and two immature GREAT CORMORANTS are lingering off of East Point Sanctuary as well. One WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was at Popham Beach State Park on the 14th. Land-based birders noted ROSEATE TERNS at Pine Point in Scarborough, Reid State Park in Georgetown, and Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg this week. A single PURPLE MARTIN was spotted over Northshore Farm on Hurricane Rd in Falmouth (Delorme Map 5: D-4) on 6/11. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER continues to visit feeders at a pair of Cousin’s Island, Yarmouth, yards this week. Late flycatchers this week included a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER in a Sanford yard on the 9th, and an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER at Capisic Pond Park on the 12th. A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was along Portland’s Eastern Promenade on the 11th, while one continues at Portland’s Dragon Field, where breeding would be surprising. The CAROLINA WREN continues here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, although it is now seen and heard less often. Another was along of Ledge Rd. in Cape Elizabeth on the 12th. Late BLACKPOLL WARBLERS included a single on Ferry Rd in Saco on the 9th, and 4 (two banded females and two singing males) on Appledore Island (Delorme Map 1: D-5) on the same day. Meanwhile, a tardy MOURNING WARBLER was singing at Freeport’s Hedgehog Mountain Park (off of Pownal Rd; Delorme Map 6: C-1) on 6/9. Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS continue to sing from the electrical sub-station along Maguire Rd in the Kennebunk Plains, at least through the weekend. No reports, positive or negative, were received about the one Clay-colored at the northeast corner of the Plains, off of Route 99. Both NELSON’S and SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were reported from their usual haunts, especially Scarborough Marsh and Popham Beach State Park, among other locales.
