This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: A stalled front and a surface low that developed along it produced more rain (heavy at times), cool temps, and NE winds Thurs. night through Sun, with a few lingering showers through Mon. Our respite on Tues. was brief, as rain developed again Wed morning as a strong low slowly moved up the coast. More rain, heavy at times, and strong NE winds continued through Thurs., with temps in the mid 50’s about 15 degrees below normal. A *ROYAL TERN* passed by Outer Green Island (SSW of Cliff Island; Delorme Map 6: E-1) at around 3:00pm on 6/3, heading southwest. Three late BRANT were at Cape Elizabeth’s Kettle Cove on 6/6. One GADWALL flew over Western Beach in Scarborough (apparently landing in the nearby golf course) on 6/4. Meanwhile, lingering seaducks included SURF, WHITE-WINGED, and 52 BLACK SCOTERS off of Higgin’s Beach in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 6/4, with other scattered scoters along the coast. A smattering of lingering RED-THROATED LOONS were noted along the coast this week. Two hours of seawatching from Cape Elizabeth’s Dyer Point (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 6/4 produced 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER, 1 MANX SHEARWATER, 76 WILSON’S STORM PETRELS, and one RAZORBILL. 1.5 hours there on the 8th produced 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER, 15 WILSON’S STORM PETRELS, and 1 RAZORBILL. One AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was spotted from the Pine Point Lobster Co-op in Scarborough Marsh on 6/5. Shorebird numbers are still decent around the area, with some high counts including 97 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS on Ferry/Western Beach in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the 4th; 34 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS on Higgin’s Beach on the 4th; 54 RUDDY TURNSTONES at Reid State Park in Georgetown on the 5th; and 43 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS at Pine Point on the 5th. Meanwhile, 4-6 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were noted at the Kennebunk Plains on 6/6, one RED KNOT was on Outer Green Island on the 3rd, and one DUNLIN was at Pine Point on the 5th. A 1st-Cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL along with the continuing apparent COMMON BLACK-HEADED x RING-BILLED GULL HYBRID were at Cumberland’s Twin Brook Recreation Area (off of Greely Rd; Delorme Map 5: D-5) on the 7th. Three ROSEATE TERNS joined foraging COMMON and LEAST TERNS at the Pine Point Narrows on the 4th, and 2-3 were spotted from Dyer Point on 6/4 and 6/8. A pair of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS continue to feed young in South Portland’s Hinckley Park (off of Highland Rd; Delorme Map 73: G-4), while a female visited a Harpswell yard on 6/2. Tardy migrants include a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER on Outer Green Island on the 3rd, an ALDER FLYCATCHER along Portland’s Eastern Promenade on the 7th; a singing SWAINSON’S THRUSH in a Portland yard on the 5th, a singing BLACKPOLL WARBLER at Portland’s Dragon Field (behind the Quarry Run Dogpark near the intersection of Ocean and Presumpscot in Portland; Delorme Map 72: C-3) on the 7th, and a singing WILSON’S WARBLER at Reid State Park on the 5th. Up to 15 PRAIRIE WARBLERS were tallied along the powerline cut between Hurricane and Blackstrap Rds. in Falmouth (Delorme Map 5: D-4) this week, with at least one LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH continuing nearby. 18 Prairies were tallied at the Kennebunk Plains on the 6th. An amazing THREE CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were found at the Kennebunk Plains on 6/6. One bird was at the far northeastern corner of the Plains, on the north side of Route 99, near the far parking area. This was quite possibly the same bird found at nearby Lloyd Nedeau Park last week. Meanwhile, two birds were singing, at the electrical sub-station along Maguire Rd (where one was found last week). All three individuals were seen again on the 7th and 8th. At least 12 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were singing in the Kennebunk Plains on 6/6. As many as 5-6 INDIGO BUNTINGS were counted along the powerline cut off of Hurricane Rd. in Falmouth on the 2nd. Three buntings are also back on territory at Portland’s Dragon Field.
