This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: SW winds Wed. night through Fri. aided late migrants, producing good flights for the following mornings. A cold front Sat. switched the winds to the NW overnight, but as the winds turned back to the SW on Sun., temp soared in the low to mid 80’s, with high humidity. A cold front Mon. night produced a few widely scattered showers (and dropped temperatures to seasonable norms), as did a warm front Tues. night, with continuing onshore winds keeping temperatures seasonable. Showers and strong thunderstorms developed on Thursday ahead of an approaching cold front. 16 straight days of measurable (at least a trace) rainfall finally ended on the 25th, setting a record for the longest streak in any month since records have been kept! A single COMMON MOORHEN has returned to Stratton Island. At least three UPLAND SANDPIPERS were at their usual haunts in the Kennebunk Plains on 5/28. Five RED KNOTS were still at Pine Point in Scarborough Marsh as of the 25th and two tardy PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were in the salt pannes off of Eastern Road on the 30th. In the same place on that date was a rare in spring STILT SANDPIPER. A great count of 400 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS came from Stratton Island on 5/24, when 75-100 passed high over a Pownal yard. Two female and one male WILSON’S PHALAROPES were observed in the salt pannes off of Eastern Rd on the 31st. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were reported from a number of areas this week, but a WHIP-POOR-WILL on Stratton Island 5/28-30 was unexpected. The RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER pair in South Portland’s Hinckley Park (off of Highland Ave; Delorme Map 73: Map G-4) was observed carrying food into their nest hole this week. Typically late-arriving flycatchers included widespread ALDER FLYCATCHER reports and a smattering of WILLOW FLYCATCHERS – including one at Portland’s Dragon Field (behind the Quarry Run Dogpark near the intersection of Ocean and Presumpscot Ave; Delorme Map 72: C-3) on 5/30 and at Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery on 6/1. A few transient YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS included singles at Bayview Preserve in Yarmouth (off of Bayview Rd; Delorme Map 6: D-1) on the 27th, and at Evergreen on the 30th. Furthermore, single OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on the 25th, a Georgetown yard on the 27th, and in Evergreen Cemetery 5/29-30. While the lonely CAROLINA WREN continues here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, one visited a York yard on the 30th. WARBLER migration certainly was continuing this week. 16 species, including one MOURNING, were tallied on Stratton Island on 5/27. 16 species at South Portland’s Hinckley Park on the same day was led by large numbers of BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, which were widely reported elsewhere this week as well. A LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH or two continues along Hurricane Road in Falmouth, and a MOURNING WARBLER was at Evergreen Cemetery 5/28-30. Meanwhile, several Mournings were banded on Appledore Island on the 31st. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found at the Lloyd Nedeau Memorial Park in Kennebunk (Delorme Map 2: D-5). The park borders the western edge of the Kennebunk Plains. From Rte 99, pass the Plains, and make your first right onto Clear Brook Crossing. Make your first right into the park, and the bird was singing from the brush beyond the ball field. No follow-up reports, positive or negative were received, but another or the same CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen in the nearby Kennebunk Plains, near the electrical sub-station off of Maguire Road the next day. Yet another CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was discovered behind the Shaw’s Supermarket in Falmouth on 5/29. From U.S Route 1, turn onto Depot Road (Delorme Map 72: B-4). Take your first left into the back entrance for the shopping center. The bird was in the scrubby area on the right. It has not been relocated. Two pairs of ORCHARD ORIOLES are building nests at Capisic Pond Park. The male of one of the pairs is an immature. A female was at Dragon Field on 5/30.
