This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the premier edition of the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert. This recording was updated on Friday, August 13, 2004. This recording will be updated every Friday. All birders are invited to submit noteworthy sightings, including, but not limited to, rarities, local breeders, unusual dates, locations or concentrations of birds. While the focus of this tape is the southcoastal counties of York, Cumberland and Sagadahoc, extraordinary observations from elsewhere in the state will occasionally be posted. Observers reporting sightings are asked to leave a detailed message that includes the species, dates, times and detailed location information, along with your name and contact info. Any other pertinent information such as viewing restrictions, etc. would be much appreciated. Currently, shorebird migration is in full swing in Southcoastal Maine 100’s of Semipalmated Sandpipers were seen along at Portland’s Back Cove (Pierson, page 88), on the 10th. The first songbirds are now on the move as well. For example, a first fall male CERULEAN WARBLER and at least 7 MOURNING WARBLERS were banded on August 11 at Laudholm Farms/Wells Reserve in Wells (Pierson, page 51). Hard to come by this year (after two tough winters), a CAROLINA WREN was calling at Evergreen Cemetary (Pierson, page 92) on the trail between the “Junk Pond” and the soccer fields early in the morning on August 13th. Meanwhile, breeding species such as NELSON’S and SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS can still be observed in Scarborough Marsh (Pierson, page 69). ROSEATE TERNS have been seen regularly at Pine Point in Scarborough (Pierson, page 76) while LEAST TERNS and PIPING PLOVERS can still be found at Laudholm Farms in Wells (Pierson, page 51) and other places along the shore.
